What Stewardship Means to Tim Mattern, NSSA®

To me, the concept of stewardship begins with the need to surrender. It’s a reframing that what we have doesn’t truly belong to us. We have temporarily been entrusted with resources—and resources are not merely money; they’re our time and talent, too. Although we are not the ultimate owners of these assets, we are accountable for their careful and responsible management during our lifetime.

There are many things I like about our firm’s recent rebranding to Stewards Planning Group, but my favorite is the new name better communicates that we are trusted by our clients to help them steward the resources they’ve been given. As part of that, we try to help clients understand that there’s nothing wrong with building wealth but rather thelove of money that causes problems. When you view money as a tool that can build meaningful experiences, teach hard work and responsibility, support causes you care about, and pass on values of faith and generosity for generations, financial planning becomes an act of obedience. It’s a privilege for financial advisorsto not only help clients design a plan that maximizes their impact but also provide the coaching and relational support to follow through on the commitments they’ve made.
